Extrablack Featured in Premier Magazine for Capella Sydney
We’re proud to share that Extrablack has been featured in Premier Magazine, one of Asia Pacific’s most influential publications for luxury design and hospitality. The feature spotlights our work on Capella Sydney, recognising the strategic thinking and craftsmanship behind the wayfinding and placemaking design we delivered for one of Australia’s most significant hotel openings.
An invitation from a leading voice in luxury design
Premier Magazine holds a distinguished position across Asia Pacific’s design and hospitality landscape, read by developers, architects and brand leaders shaping some of the region’s most ambitious projects. Being approached to feature in its pages is a meaningful acknowledgement of the calibre of work we bring to every project, and a reflection of the trust placed in us by our hospitality partners.
For a boutique, strategically led studio like Extrablack, this kind of recognition carries weight. It affirms that our approach, grounded in strategy before aesthetics, resonates not only with the clients we work alongside but with the broader industry watching how luxury hospitality experiences are shaped.

Capella Sydney: a landmark worth celebrating
The feature centres on our work for Capella Sydney, one of the most significant luxury hotel openings in the country. Extrablack was engaged to lead the wayfinding and environmental design response for the property, working closely with developer Pontiac Land Group and the Capella team to translate the brand’s global standards into a distinctly Sydney experience.
The brief demanded a careful balance. Capella Sydney occupies a heritage sandstone building dating back to 1912, once home to the NSW Department of Education. Preserving the integrity of that heritage while introducing the polish and precision expected of a world-leading luxury hospitality brand required more than good design instincts; it required a strategic platform that every touchpoint could sit within.
We researched the property’s history, its architectural significance and the expectations of a global luxury audience before a single sign was designed. This research informed every guest journey through the building, from the restrained bronze plaque marking the Farrer Place entrance to the interpretive signage layered through the interiors. Every moment of arrival, movement and discovery was considered, ensuring wayfinding felt less like navigation and more like part of the experience.
Design that knows when to be quiet
As Premier Magazine’s feature captures, the strength of the Capella Sydney signage suite lies in restraint. Navigation was conceived with the same care, intelligence and restraint as the spaces it inhabits, unlike many luxury environments where signage needs to be seen only when it needs to be seen. Achieving that took discipline: a system that supports the guest experience without ever competing with the art, architecture and interiors curated throughout the hotel.
This is where our sector depth in luxury hospitality made the difference. Having delivered projects for brands including Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, Fairmont and Jumeirah across Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Europe, we understand how luxury hospitality operates at the highest level, not just how it should look. That understanding shaped every material choice, every typographic decision and every moment of interpretive storytelling woven through the property.
Outcomes that speak for themselves
Capella Sydney has gone on to collect an extraordinary run of industry recognition, including Global Hotel of the Year at the AHEAD Awards and Metropolitan Deluxe Hotel of the Year at the NSW Accommodation Australia Awards for Excellence. While these accolades reflect the collective achievement of the architects, interiors team and Pontiac Land Group, we’re proud that our wayfinding and placemaking work plays its part in a guest experience worthy of that calibre of recognition.
Being featured in Premier Magazine adds a further dimension to that story. It positions the Capella Sydney project, and the strategic design thinking behind it, in front of an Asia Pacific audience of decision-makers who are actively shaping the next generation of luxury hospitality spaces.
Looking ahead
Recognition like this reinforces why we approach every project the way we do: strategy first, design second, always in service of a meaningful guest experience. As Extrablack continues to grow its footprint in luxury hospitality across the region, features like this one open new conversations with developers and brands who share our belief that navigation, placemaking and brand expression should feel effortless and timeless.
We look forward to continuing to unlock potential for our hospitality partners, and to sharing more of these stories as they unfold.
